Not Another Teen Movie

Etc.

Jun 19, 2015

The high-school movie genre is a tired one, filled with lame parties, bad decisions, and “Will you go to prom with me?” drama. It’s rare when there’s a teenage flick that actually gives these themes a major kick in the butt — which is why we’re so obsessed with Dope. After premiering as one of the buzziest films at this year’s Sundance film festival, the comedy premieres this weekend in theaters nationwide. With Pharrell as executive producer and a cast of young upstarts (like Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons), it’s a fast-talking, ’90s-nodding comedy that you’ll want to watch again as soon as the credits come up.

Dope follows Malcolm (Moore), a high-schooler who lives in Inglewood, California. He’s nerdy in the sense that he gets shoved against lockers, but actually cool in the sense that his wardrobe is packed with wildly printed tees, vintage sweatshirts, and rad sneakers. One night, Malcolm sets aside college applications in order to attend a party hosted by Dom (played by A$AP Rocky), and one mistake leads to a wild adventure with his friends Jib (Revolori) and Diggy (Clemons, who’s a major emerging star to watch). Featuring cameos from Chanel Iman, Zoe Kravitz, and more, the comedy shows what can happen when life takes a weird twist — and it’s up to Malcolm to set things right. Watch the trailer below, then go see Dope in theaters this weekend.
